The biggest ebook-marketing mistake, I see people make is not determining their unique niche before they write an ebook. If your ebook ideas, products and services are not unique, you could easily be wasting your time and your ebook could become a novelty item only read by friends and family.

To become an expert in your field you need to know what your ebook-marketing niche is; what makes you special, better, different from everyone else and why people should choose your ebook over your competitors’.

To find your ebook-marketing niche, answer the following three questions:

Who are your prospective clients/customers?

What is it that you have to offer them?

Why would they want to pick you over your competitor?

If you can answer these questions, then you have found your ebook-marketing niche and are ready to move ahead and publish an ebook. If not, you will want to take a little time to find the answers before moving forward and writing an ebook.

Once you find what people are looking for and what consumers want then you can figure out which products and services to offer whether they are your own unique products, or other people’s products. This can be done by doing simple searches on the Internet and checking sites such as Technorati and Digg to find what’s popular. Resources such as these should give you plenty of ideas and topics to write an ebook and create marketing materials that are in alignment with your ebook-marketing niche.

Now before you go and publish an ebook, there’s one more thing you need to address. Why would someone pick you over your competitor? What makes you the better choice?

Check out your competition. Even if you think you know, don’t skip this step! You’ll not only find out what your competition is doing but you can find out what keywords they are using and what works and what doesn’t work. (Take notes because you may want to joint venture with them at a later date!)

Once you know what’s out there, find a way that you can do something a little differently, better, or faster than everyone else out there! This is what will help you stand out from the competitors. If you can improve on what’s already out there, you can dominate your ebook-marketing niche and be very successful.

An excellent example is Domino’s Pizza. There were plenty of pizza places before Domino’s came into the market and pizza delivery was not a new service, but home deliver left much to be desired and the pizza often arrived cold!

Domino’s came up with a way to deliver pizza in a timely manner, keep the pizza hot and it was delicious! Plus they offered their consumers a delivery-time guarantee; if they didn’t get to your pizza to the door in 30 minutes or less, hot, it was free. And they delivered on their promise! So it became the obvious choice when ordering pizza in; they dominated the market.

You can do the same thing by following the steps laid out in this article.

Have you ever wondered how the pros find eBook topics that are fresh, unique and appealing? They stay tuned in and listening to what’s going on around them. Because believe me, ideas are everywhere! And finding what peaks your target market’s interest is the key to finding the best and most profitable topics for your ebooks. You just have to concentrate on finding them! Here are some excellent resources to help you find your next winning topic.

1. Refer to your personal experiences: Many of the best ideas come from a person’s own frustrations and problems. When I have an issue or problem, I work through it and if I find a way to make the course of action simpler, faster, or better, I take that experience and I either write an ebook or use that experience for a new product idea. You can do the same! People are always looking for a better way to do things, if you can provide them with the information they want, you can make big money.

2. Take advantage of the media: There currently are more media outlets than ever to help you find ebook topics, including: newspapers, television, news websites, blogs, social networking sites, article sites, and more. These are great resources for you to use! Sign up for services that keep you updated on the latest news; Technorati, Google alerts, Digg, etc. That way you can see what’s new and most importantly, what’s getting the most attention from readers. These sources will give you endless choices for ebook topics.

3. Keep your ears open: You never know when you are going to hear a great idea. Maybe it’s hanging out at Starbucks, while you’re having dinner in a restaurant, or standing in the line at the grocery store. Pay attention to the conversations around you, but be discreet. This can be a great way to get insight into what people are interested in and in turn can give you the next winning idea for an ebook!

4. Listen to your customers: When you publish an ebook, remember who you are writing for. Your readers are the reason you write an ebook, so one of the best ways to find ebook topics is to ask your clients for their ideas, thoughts and opinions. Listen to what they say and then write an ebook that gives them exactly what concerns them. If you do this every time, you publish an ebook, your ebook sales will skyrocket!

5. Hold a customer-appreciation day: Allow your clients or subscribers to call in and chat with you at no charge. I bet you will learn more from them then they will learn from you! You can also offer your clients consultation services. Take notes! You’ll not only learn, but you will earn money at the same time!

Authors don’t always pick a great ebook title that conveys what their ebook is actually about, which can leave a reader confused or feeling mislead. The right ebook title hooks the reader. It gives them something they really want, it grabs their attention, and it tells them what the benefit is going to be to them if they read it.

The wrong ebook title, on the other hand, is one that is uninspiring and may get passed over. If your readers don’t get excited by the title or don’t connect with it, they will move on to something that does excite them. The right ebook title is essential for your success in all of your ebook-marketing efforts.

Recognizing The Right eBook Title:

Tim Ferris wrote a best-selling book called The 4-Hour Work Week. Tim originally planned to title his book The Vagabond Millionaire because it conveyed the idea that he didn’t have to be tied down to one place; he could travel and conduct his business anywhere and still make millions! But when he tested it, people didn’t like it. To them, the word “Vagabond” had a negative connotation and subliminally brought about the message of being aimless, destitute or down-and-out. Nobody wanted it! (If you’re not familiar with the book, it is about how to outsource and put your business on automatic so you don’t have to work so hard.)

I venture to guess that if he would have named it, Outsourcing: Where To Find The Best Companies And How To Use Them, that it wouldn’t have done half as well as it has as The 4-Hour Work Week.

Not only are good ebook title important, they may even be more important than traditional book titles. When you publish an ebook, you want people to be able to find it and not only do your titles need to grab a readers’ attention, good ebook titles need to capture the attention of the search engines as well. So make sure you do some research on keywords before you write an ebook and keep those keywords consistent throughout your ebook-marketing campaign.

(Keywords are the words people search for when they are looking for a particular topic and if your ebook is on the topic they are looking for, you want to make sure they can find it easily and effortlessly!)

One problem I commonly see when people publish an ebook is that the title and text don’t match. Some authors come up with what seems like a good ebook title but upon reading the content, you may find the title has little or nothing to do with the subject of the ebook or maybe it represents the wrong perspective. This doesn’t help your ebook-marketing efforts and could actually end up hurting your reputation. Plus it could end up filling your mailbox with bad reviews and comments instead of overflowing with orders for your ebook.

So if you want to sell a lot of ebooks, find a good ebook title, one that catches your readers’ attention and makes them want to read on. Don’t forget to include keywords in your title that you can also use in your ebook-marketing efforts. Make sure when you write an ebook, your title reflects what your content is actually about. Follow these guidelines and you could have a best-seller on your hands and a lot more cash in your pockets!

This is an important step in any ebook-writing endeavor! (Unless you know what’s already out there, you’re not going to know how much competition you’ll have, whether what you want to write about has already been done or not, (and therefore whether it is worth doing at all) and what topics are HOT that you could really sink your teeth into!)

There are four main reasons why people don’t research ebook topics.

They don’t know how to do it.

Fear of the unknown or having to do something new, sometimes stops people from moving forward.

They are lazy and don’t want to do it.

They get excited about an idea and it “feels” right, so they go ahead and publish an ebook, assuming that if they are excited others will be too and so it will automatically be profitable..

A lot of people don’t know how to do the research so they just don’t do it. Instead of taking the time to find a coach, a mentor, or a homestudy program or ebook, they just forge ahead. It’s like taking a road trip without a map1 This is a huge mistake.

The time and energy it takes to get the right information to learn to do the research will save you a huge amount of time and probably some heartbreak too! If you don’t , it’s really easy to get discouraged thinking you can’t make money with ebooks and giving up entirely when your project doesn’t pan out the way you’d hoped! So learn how to do the research THEN write your ebook!

Another common problem is fear of the unknown. Authors don’t know what doing the research entails, it scares them. And again, they don’t seek the information they need to demystify the process and move forward so they stay stuck.

Then there are those who are simply lazy and don’t want to put in the time to do the research, not realizing that it would have been a lot easier to simply get it done then to avoid doing it!

And finally there are those who get so excited about their idea that they are sure the world is just waiting breathlessly for their ebook and it will be a number-one best-seller! Then they are devasted when it doesn’t happen.

It’s okay to trust your gut initially, but then you need to back it up with solid research so you KNOW you are writing a profitable ebook before you write the first word! Why guess when you can know for sure? It just doesn’t make any sense!

So the bottom line is that if you don’t do the research you could very easily miss the boat on what your readers are looking for. And without this knowledge, you are doomed to fail. If you want to be successful in your ebook writing, you MUST dig deep and find out EXACTLY what your readers want and how you can give it to them. That is the key to your success!

1. Model your eBooks from books and eBooks that have already been successful in your niche. You’ll find a tremendous selection of examples online or just take a trip to your local bookstore. If your niche is very specific, you may want to find specialty shops and online eBooks sources that have eBooks/books in your specialty and do your research there.

2. Keywords are critical, search for keywords that are getting a large amount of requests through search engines. Generally these are the words that describe what people are searching for online when they are looking for an eBook in your niche.

3. Keep your writing in a conversational tone that can easily be understood by anyone. One of the mistakes I see people make over and over is trying to reach a consumer audience while speaking in the same manner, they would use when speaking to a group of colleagues at a convention! This overuse of language will usually go right over the heads of the people they are trying to reach the most and your message won’t be heard.

4. Always keep your audience forefront in your mind when writing your titles, chapter headings and subchapter headings. The person you are selling your eBook to and the end user may be two different groups of people. For instance, I wrote The Moving Cure, How To Organize Your Move To Save Time, Money & Your Sanity [ www.movingtips4u.com] for people who are moving. My plan was to sell this eBook to realtors, mortgage brokers and other businesses that deal with people who are moving. While my sales pitch has to appeal to these type of business professionals, my eBook also had to appeal to the people who are actually moving. So always be aware of who the actual reader of your eBook will be as you organize and write your headings.

5. Loosen up and have fun with your headings. The object of writing your eBook should be to both educate and entertain your audience. So come up with headings that are fun and/or peak the reader’s curiosity. Remember the goal is to grab and hold the readers attention. If your headings are boring, you are going to lose your readers so always keep it informative and entertaining.
